PEARL Reporters meet in New York Print E-mail
Wednesday, 18 April 2007

Twelve PEARL Reporters from Ireland, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, UK and the US came together for the first time in New York this March. They participated in and covered the Celebration of Teaching and Learning conference, organized by public broadcasters Thirteen/WNET and WLIW21. The conference attracted over 10,000 educators who attended discussions and shared resources on "Science and Global Awareness."

David Mc Hugh (Ireland), David Mc Guinness (Ireland), Darren Flynn (Ireland), Long Nguyen (Vietnam), Lorna Nickson-Brown (UK), Sultan Mehmood (Pakistan) and Yaroslav Ovcharenko (Uzbekistan) were in New York for barely a week. But during this time, they did everything from flying kites at the Cathedral School for iEARN's Flying Kites project, attending a special briefing on the Millennium Development Goals at the UN, meeting their course evaluators at  Columbia University's Journalism School, and joining a night of music and entertainment at the Apollo Theatre.

The PEARL Reporters also met journalists from some of the world's leading media organizations, including the BBC, AP, Bloomberg News and their hosts, Thirteen/WNET. Later, they were joined by local PEARL Reporters Ann Morrin, Anam Baig, Heather Vale, Dominique Johnson and Ben Batchelder to spend an evening at the top of the Empire State Building.

At the conference, the PEARL group shared the stage with journalist and anchor, Daljit Dhaliwal, to discuss global awareness and the state of the media in their countries. They met with Dr Judea Pearl, father of Daniel Pearl and president of the Daniel Pearl Foundation.

In between their presentations, the PEARL Reporters also acted as youth correspondents for the conference, covering as many sessions as they could attend. Here are their stories:
